Ric Chetter - From Radioland

When you go to a thrift store, you will encounter bits of things we have all had that at one time were the latest and greatest in technology. Ric was recently at a Memphis flea market and came across a piece of "antiquated" technology that he had to have. But there are some things in a thrift store Ric will absolutely avoid at all costs.

One of the most interesting things existing in the broadcast world are televangelists. In this episode, Ric takes a look at what makes this genre of broadcast work. When taken with a grain of salt, there is a lot of humor in this strange world. They have now found a way to ply their trade on the internet. The sad thing about this is people are still giving these hucksters money. By the truck load.

Over the years, the city of Memphis has had a hell of a relationship with music. One need not look further than the big things here, Graceland, Stax and Beale Street. In this episode, Ric takes a look at the relationship between the city and its money maker and how it would appear to the outsider that for the most part will, at times and for no real reason, ignore some of the things happening here.

In a recent broadcast of Booze & Blues on Radio Memphis, Ric welcomed to the show Robert Gordon. Robert is an author and film-maker of documentaries. His latest book is about Stax and Memphis music. He also has a film in theaters now about William F. Buckley and Gore Vidal called Best of Enemies. In this episode they talk about all these things plus you'll hear the story of the ghosts of Stax and hear some music that was left behind.

We as humans are a talkative bunch. Noisy and bombastic. When you try to listen to what the general population is talking about, you find that people, for the most part are saying some incredible things. Not in a good way, either. Once you consider the prevalence of social media and the impact it has on people, the noise gets louder and louder. And what are they saying? Moronic things.

The music business is a difficult animal to reckon with. It has endured many changes over the years and it seems in this day and time, the industry is facing its largest challenges yet. In this episode, Ric sits down with Dianna Fryer, GM of Pirate Radio Studios, Inc. to talk about this very thing. Along the way, it has been decided that Radio Memphis is doing it all wrong, by people who not even in the business. Plus, how about a cooking show?

NEXT WEEK: People say incredible things.

If Facebook was an actual physical place, Ric set foot in this "place". Along the way, he also found himself in a shopping mall that was at one time one of the busiest places around. Times have changed. For better or worse? Online consumerism has taken the lead. People being people and all, there is a noticeable void except for the one place that is the physical equivalent of Facebook. It's desperate, sad and kind of terrifying.

People make shocking statements all the time. Sometimes they make those statements without using their mouths. Sometimes, these people pull a gun and shoot people. On live TV no less. In this episode, Ric makes his own shocking statements about some of things people have actually said and done in public. Provocative? Maybe.

Thanks to the internet and social media, we as a society are inundated with information. Good and bad. A lot of it not even worth anyone's time. Nevertheless, we have to sift through all of this on a moment to moment basis. This gets tiring. When we get tired of this, then we all get a little jumpy. In this episode, Ric tells you how to cope. It is simply this, breathe.
